On the west mesa above the city, thousands of ancient images carved into dark volcanic rock wait quietly to be found. Petroglyph National Monument protects over 24,000 petroglyphs created by Ancestral Pueblo peoples and early Spanish settlers — one of the largest petroglyph sites in North America.

Thursday evenings are an ideal time to visit. The afternoon light is golden, the crowds have thinned, and the walk along the basalt escarpment feels meditative in a way that’s hard to manufacture anywhere else. Open daily. Small vehicle fee at Boca Negra Canyon ($2 weekdays). Sunset arrives later in spring and summer — check NPS.gov for sunset times to plan your visit.
