The Rio Grande Bosque is one of the great natural corridors of the American Southwest — a ribbon of cottonwood forest running alongside the river that has sustained life in this desert valley for thousands of years. The Rio Grande Nature Center State Park offers some of the most accessible and rewarding trails into it.

Monday mornings here belong to the early risers: birders with binoculars, locals walking their dogs at sunrise, and visitors who’ve figured out that the best version of Albuquerque exists in the hour before the day gets going. Sandhill cranes, great blue herons, and migratory songbirds are common sightings along the paved and dirt paths through the cottonwoods.

From Santuario Grande, the nature center is just a few minutes south on Rio Grande Blvd — an easy start to any morning before the heat of the day sets in.

Open daily 8am–5pm. $3 per vehicle entry fee. Trails range from half a mile to 2.5 miles. Interpretive programs and guided walks offered on select weekends.
