Things to Do Near Santuario Grande: The Best of Los Ranchos & the North Valley

Santuario Grande sits in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque — a small, intentionally quiet village incorporated specifically to preserve the agricultural and residential character of the North Valley. It is not a hotel district. There is no strip mall attached. That’s the point. But within 15 minutes of the property in every direction, Albuquerque and the North Valley offer a concentration of excellent food, culture, outdoor space, and local character that rewards guests who explore beyond the downtown and Old Town circuits.
Casa Rondena Winery
One of New Mexico’s finest wineries is practically a neighbor. Casa Rondena’s stunning Spanish colonial estate and wine garden is located in Los Ranchos, walkable from Santuario Grande. The winery produces French-inspired reds and whites from New Mexico fruit, and the tasting room — a converted hacienda with a fountain courtyard — is one of the most beautiful settings for a glass of wine in the state. Open Thursday through Sunday.
Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm
Los Poblanos is the North Valley’s most celebrated property — a historic lavender farm, organic agricultural operation, and inn set on 25 acres of cultivated land. Even if you’re staying at Santuario Grande, Los Poblanos is worth a morning or afternoon visit. The farm shop sells lavender products, organic pantry items, and the farm’s own honey. La Merienda, their acclaimed dining room, serves farm-to-table breakfast that draws guests from across the city.
Rio Grande Nature Center State Park
The bosque along the Rio Grande is one of New Mexico’s great natural corridors, and the Rio Grande Nature Center provides the best organized access. Walking trails wind through cottonwood forest, along the river, and through restored wetlands that attract hundreds of bird species year-round. Sandhill cranes winter here in the thousands; migratory songbirds fill the canopy in spring and fall. The visitor center has exhibits on the bosque ecosystem.
Corrales Village
Just across the river from Los Ranchos, the village of Corrales is a 10-minute drive that feels like a different world. Adobe homes set back from a winding main street, the Corrales Growers Market on Wednesday and Sunday mornings, the historic San Ysidro Church, local galleries, and Gruet Winery’s tasting room all make Corrales worth an easy afternoon.
Old Town Albuquerque
The historic heart of the city is 15 minutes from Santuario Grande. The Plaza, the San Felipe de Neri Church (founded 1706), the surrounding galleries and shops, and the Albuquerque Museum are all walkable from the Old Town parking area. The Sawmill Market — a thoughtfully curated food hall in the nearby Sawmill district — is one of the best lunch destinations in the city.
Bosque Trail System
The paved and unpaved trail system along the Rio Grande runs for miles in both directions from multiple access points near Santuario Grande. Cycling, walking, and wildlife watching are all excellent. The trail passes through cottonwood bosque that is particularly beautiful in spring green and autumn gold. Rentable bikes are available at several points along the corridor.
Santuario Grande is the quiet center of a rich neighborhood. Reserve your stay and let us be your base for exploring everything the North Valley has to offer.
