Old Town Albuquerque transforms into one of the Southwest’s most moving cultural experiences each year as Día de los Muertos arrives. The ancient Hispano and Indigenous tradition of honoring the departed fills the historic plaza and surrounding streets with color, candlelight, and a spirit of joyful remembrance that is unlike anything else in the region.

Community ofrendas line the walkways — altars built with marigold flowers, photographs, candles, and objects meaningful to those being remembered. Participants come in traditional calavera face paint and clothing, and the atmosphere combines reverence with genuine celebration. Artisan vendors, traditional foods, live music, and processions carry the celebration across multiple evenings.

Santuario Grande’s location makes it a natural home base for guests attending the Old Town celebration. The property’s own atmosphere — quiet, intentional, rooted in New Mexico tradition — aligns naturally with the spirit of the holiday. Spend the evening in Old Town, then return to the cottonwood quiet of Los Ranchos.
