Gathering of Nations Powwow: North America’s Largest Indigenous Celebration

Every April, Albuquerque hosts the largest powwow in North America — and one of the most extraordinary cultural events on the continent. The Gathering of Nations draws more than 3,000 Native American and First Nations dancers from over 700 tribes, accompanied by hundreds of drum groups, artisan vendors, and tens of thousands of visitors from across the world. If you have never attended, there is nothing that quite prepares you for the scale, the color, and the power of the Grand Entry.
What Is the Gathering of Nations?
Founded in 1983, the Gathering of Nations Powwow takes place at Tingley Coliseum at Expo New Mexico over three days in late April. It is not a performance or a reenactment — it is a living cultural gathering where tribal nations come together in dance, song, and community. The event is deeply meaningful to participants and is conducted with protocols and traditions that deserve respect from all attendees.
What to Expect
The centerpiece of the event is the Grand Entry — hundreds of dancers entering the arena in regalia that represents their specific tribal traditions. The visual impact is staggering. Each dance style — Traditional, Fancy, Jingle Dress, Grass Dance, Fancy Shawl — tells a story, and watching skilled dancers compete across these categories is genuinely moving.
Beyond the competition arena, the powwow grounds host an expansive market of Native American art, jewelry, pottery, textiles, and food. This is one of the best places in the country to purchase authentic handmade Native artwork directly from artists.
The Miss Indian World pageant, held concurrently, celebrates Indigenous women leaders and cultural ambassadors — another highlight that draws its own passionate audience.
Practical Information
The Gathering of Nations typically spans Friday evening through Sunday at Tingley Coliseum and Expo New Mexico, 300 San Pedro Dr NE. General admission tickets are available at the gate; specific session tickets cover Grand Entry events. Plan for crowds — this is a well-attended event, and the parking situation benefits from early arrival.
Staying at Santuario Grande
Santuario Grande in Los Ranchos de Albuquerque is a 15-minute drive from Expo New Mexico, making it an ideal home base for visitors attending the powwow. The property’s quiet garden setting provides a meaningful counterpoint to the energy of the event — a place to reflect after an afternoon of witnessing something genuinely extraordinary.
