Romantic Things to Do in Albuquerque: A Couples Guide
Albuquerque doesn’t make the typical “most romantic cities” lists, which is exactly why it should. The city has quiet mornings, dramatic sunsets, and enough space to feel like you have the place to yourselves. Here’s what we recommend to couples staying with us.
Sunset at the Sandia Crest Tramway
The Sandia Peak Tramway takes you 2.7 miles up the Sandia Mountains in a 15-minute ride. Time it for 90 minutes before sunset and you’ll watch the sun drop behind the volcanoes on the west mesa while the lights of Albuquerque come on below. The tram runs Thursday through Sunday. Tickets are $29 per person round-trip.
At the top, the Sandiago’s Grill restaurant has a deck with the best view in the state. The green chile cheeseburger is $14 and worth it. Reservations aren’t required but the deck fills up 30 minutes before sunset in summer.
Dinner at Los Poblanos
The Campo at Los Poblanos is a farm-to-table restaurant set on 25 acres of lavender fields in the North Valley. The menu changes seasonally, but the constant is that everything on the plate was grown or raised within 50 miles. Dinner for two with wine runs about $180.
What makes it romantic isn’t just the food u2014 it’s the setting. The restaurant sits in a historic 1930s building designed by John Gaw Meem. The patio has string lights over the lavender beds, and in the evening the smell of lavender mixes with the sage from the cooking. Reservations are required on weekends.
Petroglyph National Monument at Golden Hour
The Petroglyph National Monument has 24,000 images carved into volcanic rocks by Native American and Spanish settlers over 400 years. The Mesa Point Trail is a 1.5-mile loop that’s easy to walk and has the highest concentration of petroglyphs.
Go 90 minutes before sunset. The basalt rocks glow red in the low light, and the petroglyphs become more visible as the angle of the sun changes. The trail is free, parking is free, and you’ll likely have it to yourself. Bring water u2014 there’s no shade on the trail.
Old Town Evening Walk
Old Town Albuquerque is touristy during the day, but after 6 PM the crowds thin and the plaza takes on a different character. The San Felipe de Neri Church, built in 1793, lights up at night. The shops close at 7 PM but the restaurants stay open, and the narrow brick streets are quiet enough for conversation.
Start at the plaza, walk north through the gazebo, and follow the brick paths through the residential streets. The adobe walls glow in the evening light. Church Street Cafe has a patio that faces the church u2014 the green chile enchiladas are $16 and the patio has live guitar on Friday nights.
Hot Air Balloon Ride at Sunrise
You can’t talk about Albuquerque without mentioning balloons. A sunrise balloon ride costs about $200 per person and lasts 60-90 minutes. The balloons launch between 6 AM and 7 AM depending on the season, and the ride takes you over the Rio Grande valley with the Sandia Mountains to the east.
Rainbow Ryders and World Balloon are the two main operators. Both launch from the north side of the city. Book 48 hours in advance u2014 they fill up on weekends. The tradition after landing is a champagne toast, which goes back to the 1780s when balloons were invented in France.
Bosque Moonlight Walk
The bosque u2014 the cottonwood forest along the Rio Grande u2014 is open 24 hours. On a full moon night, the light filtering through the cottonwoods is bright enough to walk without a flashlight. The Paseo del Bosque Trail is paved and runs 16 miles from Alameda to the South Valley.
Park at the Alameda Boulevard trailhead, which is a 10-minute drive from Santuario Grande. Walk south for a mile and you’ll be deep enough in the trees to forget the city exists. The full moon in August 2026 is on August 9.
Wine Tasting at Casa Rondena
Casa Rondena Winery is a 5-minute drive from Santuario Grande. The vineyard sits on 12 acres in Los Ranchos and produces Meritage, Cabernet, and a Syrah that’s won New Mexico wine competitions. The tasting room is open Thursday through Sunday, and a flight of five wines costs $15.
The patio overlooks the vineyard with the Sandia Mountains in the background. On Saturday evenings they have live jazz from 5 PM to 8 PM. A bottle of wine and a cheese board for two runs about $65.
